Tools Don't Matter

August 20, 2018

If you're a new designer, please don't feel the pressure to marry a tool. (both figurative and literal) It seems like this year, more than ever, we have been blasted by one new tool release after another. (Studio, a reworked version of Figma, endless updates to Sketch and the all-new Framer X come to mind) The truth is, they all have strengths and weaknesses. Adapt. Grow. Learn.

A carpenter isn't considered great because of the tool they use. An architect isn't considered great because of the protractor they use. A pro basketball player isn't a pro because of the shoes they wear. In every case, these people are considered great because they have a mastery of their craft. New tools will always offer new features and suggest ways that they can make you more efficient at your craft. But these tools are simply that, an item that the skilled use to do their job. Never lose sight of that when you see an ad for the next big thing.
